They come in a range of sizes to suit most standard cabinets. Always check the product dimensions against your cabinet before buying.
Yes. The inner compartments are removable, making them simple to empty, clean, and maintain.
Yes. Many models feature multiple compartments, making them perfect for separating general waste, recycling, and food waste.
They’re constructed from high-quality materials designed for daily use, with smooth sliding mechanisms and strong, long-lasting compartments.
Automatic sensor bins offer convenient and hygienic waste disposal. They are more hygienic and convenient than other types of waste bins, as you do not have to touch any part of the bin directly to dispose of rubbish. This avoids any contamination and helps to keep your house more germ-free. Even with both hands full, you can open the bin to dispose of waste easily with a simple gesture.
Auto sensor bins use an infrared sensor to detect movement and open automatically. Infrared is more common than many people realise—everyday items such as TV remotes, security systems, automatic doors, heat lamps, and toasters all rely on it.
What is Infrared?
Infrared Radiation (IR), or infrared light, is a type of radiant energy that we cannot see with the naked eye. It was discovered accidentally by astronomer William Herschel, who noticed that the temperature just beyond visible red light from a prism was highest.
Within the electromagnetic spectrum, infrared waves sit just below visible red light and above microwaves—hence the name infrared.
Everyday Role of Infrared
All objects on Earth emit infrared radiation in the form of heat.
This radiation can be detected with devices such as infrared cameras and night vision sensors.
An infrared sensor is a compact electronic device that detects and measures infrared radiation in its environment.
These sensors are low in power usage, simple in design, and highly convenient—making them perfect for auto sensor bins.
The sensors in our Inmotion waste bins are Active Infrared (AIR) sensors. These emit and receive infrared radiation, allowing the bin to detect movement—usually a simple wave of your hand—and open automatically.
How an AIR Sensor Works
An AIR sensor has two main parts: an LED and a receiver.
The LED projects an infrared light (invisible to the naked eye) out into the room.
If the receiver does not detect any reflected signal, the bin stays closed.
When you place an object or hand in front of the LED, the infrared rays bounce back into the receiver.
This reflection triggers a switch, which opens the lid.
A firm hand wave or movement is required to reflect enough rays to activate the sensor reliably.
Follow these troubleshooting tips to keep your InMotion waste bin running smoothly and extend its lifespan.
Use the Controls Properly
Avoid manually opening and closing the lid—this can damage the internal gears.
If you need the lid open for longer, use the manual open/close buttons on the front of the bin.
Common Issues and Fixes
Protective film – Many bins ship with a clear film over the buttons and sensor. Remove this film, or the infrared LED won’t work correctly.
Batteries – Cheap batteries may not have enough power to run the mechanism. Always use good-quality batteries from reputable retailers.
Isolator switch – Check the main switch on the back of the lid. If it’s off, the bin won’t work (an easy detail to miss).
Initialisation time – After switching on, allow up to 10 seconds for the bin to initialise. Once active, the LED should flash every 7–10 seconds.
Sensor activation – Use slow, assured movements to trigger the infrared sensor. Moving too quickly may not reflect enough rays to activate the lid.
Factory Reset
If none of the above solves the problem, perform a factory reset:
Remove the batteries for 24 hours.
This discharges the system and restores the sensor unit to its original factory settings.
In most cases, this resolves persistent sensor issues.
